We took an unplanned detour through Utah when the smog was settling in in Idaho. Figuring we might not see much of the Tetons, and giving my poor out of shape car engine a chance to recuperate, we rerouted through flatter lands.
The Snake River vs. The Oregon Trail
We stopped at Glenn’s Ferry, a popular spot for crossing the Snake River on the Oregon trail. Crossing sounds like it was awful. I guess they were a little early for the giant arch bridge we used to get across.
Prison camps in America
Checking the state highway map for points of interest, I decided to check out this reminder of disturbing U.S. history – a Japanese “relocation” camp in the middle of nowhere Idaho. Thousands of people were forcefully relocated from Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California and hauled to this random place in Idaho to basically establish a fully independent city.
There is an “Honor Roll” board of camp residents who served in the armed forces in defense of the very country that doubted their loyalties and relocated them.
This is one of many camps located in the west. This happened, in America, not that long ago.
Utah! Ogden
We rerouted into Utah to stay fit the night in Ogden. I inadvertently booked us in a hotel that was overrun with a College Football team complete with entourage. The lobby was madness, but they were polite. Next morning we grabbed breakfast and hit the road for Wyoming.
Wyoming! Fort Bridger
Pretty cool. A place with lots of history and inhabitants over the years. Mormons. Native Americans. US army. Pony express. Oregon trail. Very popular.

Historic outhouse.

Rawlins
Steak dinner. Sleep. Fuel.
Denver!

Weary from the road, our arrival was slightly anti-climactic. We unpacked the car, checked in to the hotel, drove by my future home, got tasty dinner, and relaxed.
The next day, my car went in for a well-deserved rejuvenating spa treatment.
