October’s first sweet potato

Mid October, the garden is gradually settling in for winter.

Plot overview

The plot is starting to clear out. Marigolds are really hitting their stride while others are calling it a year.

Notable Harvest

Sweet potatoes

These are my first grown and harvested sweet potatoes! I started them from slips off of a grocery store sweet potato, and pretty much just watered them and pinned their vines up as they grew all season. Finally I decided I couldn’t wait any longer to see what was going on underground. To my delight I found at least one kind of big sweet potato! Digging them out was not easy since the skin is so tender. Next year if I grow again my plan is to grow in grow bags so I can dump them out and make sure I’ve got them all without damaging them in the process.

Assorted roots

Squash

Zucchini season is over, with the romanesco producing several weird shaped final fruits. I still ate one of them and it was tasty! Butternut and honeynuts are coming out. Several little late season honeynuts are on the vine and I’m giving them a little more time.

Tomatoes are forever

The tomato plants are out, but I still have some tomatoes sitting around getting ripe. I put a bunch of green and partially ripening ones in a big brown bag and they just keep ripening. I keep roasting them and freezing them for future soups and sauces.
